Extract from Dorothy Blanchard's book “My Road to Tokirima” (1995). Published with kind permission from Barbara Blanchard. THE GOLF CLUB The Golf Club began in Tokirima in 1960 and we were keen as anyone in the district. We played until Broughton's illness prevented him from playing. Flo Blank and Nora Old, two local farmers' wives had been going twenty miles to play golf at Matiere . They, and friends, called a meeting and it was decided to start a club in Tokirima. Fred Bland, Flo's husband, offered his farm as a site for the golf course and work began. We fenced the greens and mowed them by roster and bought a new mower and Fred provided a shed for a golf house. We played golf from 1960 to 1976 with great enthusiasm and very great enjoyment. We always had an excuse for a game – two days a week and sometimes more. Our local club was only three miles away from us and we could go down at the drop of a hat, or a ring from Alan French, who also milked cows. During his time at golf Broughton had the pleasure of three holes – in – one. The first was on the difficult sixth over the gully and the second and third on the short eighth. (Mrs Blanchard left Tokirima in 1986 moving to Marton to be closer to family. Thus ending fifty three years of Blanchard involvement in Tokirima. )
